  1. For severe ankle sprains ice baths are the best way to go. Bucket partially filled with ice and water and dunk that baby in there for 8-10 mintues. It is going to be profoundly uncomfortable but there is no better method to reduce inflammation, pain and swelling. It will speed your recovery time by shortening the acute inflammatory phase as well as tisse damage caused by inflamamtion. Do not put heat on it until the swelling goes down almost back to normal (at least a couple of weeks), then rotate ice and heat. Ice 20 mintues, rest 20 mintes, heat 20 mintues, repeat.
